Fast-moving snow system to hit Waterloo Region

By CityNews Kitchener Staff

Some late-February snow is set to hit Waterloo Region on Tuesday night into Wednesday morning, making for a treacherous commute.

Environment Canada issued a special weather statement for snowfall for the region, warning of between 5 and 10 cm of snow with reduced visibility in some areas.

An Alberta Clipper is moving across Ontario and will hit the region beginning Tuesday evening.

The weather service is alerting residents to allow for extra time during travel due to deteriorating road conditions.

Local municipalities are also preparing for the snowfall. The City of Kitchener says a snow event will take effect Wednesday at 2 a.m.

Bitter cold on Tuesday

People woke up to wind and a deep chill that felt like -20. Environment Canada’s forecast notes that it will be close to -15 in the afternoon.

Denise Andreacchi, weather specialist with 570 NewsRadio, said Tuesday’s cold is well below seasonal for late February.

Temperatures will stabilize in the region on Wednesday as conditions turn windy but closer to seasonal, she said, before a stretch of above‑zero highs arrives Friday and Saturday to wrap up the month.

Another cooldown is expected afterward, with the first week of March trending below seasonal.

The wintry stretch comes as a powerful storm system blankets parts of the northeastern United States with heavy snow, snarling travel and closing schools across several states. Major cities along the Interstate 95 corridor saw their first significant snowfall in months, with some regions reporting hazardous whiteout conditions and widespread delays.
