Region looking for feedback on Trussler Road plan by Hwy. 7/8

The Region of Waterloo is looking for feedback on plans to improve a key stretch of Trussler Road through Kitchener and Wilmot Township.

The area in question stretches from Bleams Road through to Yellow Birch Drive, right near Highway 7/8. Improvements could include new roundabouts, sidewalks, bike lanes, and even a multi-use trail.

A presentation on the plan, which could ring in around $12.58 million, highlights the options.

It noted the roadway as it is, won’t be able to accommodate growth in the area for the next 10 years. Especially when it comes to cyclists and pedestrians.

Regional statistics show by 2037, the average annual daily traffic along Trussler Road is projected to be around 35,000 and 48,700 north of Highway 7/8.

“The Regional Transportation Master Plan has identified this road as needing to be widened with active transportation facilities. This project is in the early stages of a Municipal Class Environmental Assessment,” read the presentation.

Of the options on the table, staff are recommending Trussler be widened to four lanes and have either sidewalks and bike lanes installed, or a multi-use path.

Roundabouts are also already being installed on that stretch of Trussler Road.

Feedback on the improvements is being collected until June 10.

The final designs are set to be presented to Regional Council in the fall this year.

The Ministry of Transportation (MTO) is behind the Trussler and Highway 7/8 interchange upgrades.
