Guelph man pulls knife on taxi driver after confrontation to pay fare

Police received reports of an incident around the St. George’s Square area, after a 65-year-old man from Guelph punched and pulled out a knife on a taxi driver.
Officers responded to the disturbance on Aug. 13 at around 1:40 p.m. They discovered that a man rode a taxi to downtown Guelph. But, before he was able to pay his fare, police say the rider told the taxi driver that he had to stop at the bank and cash a cheque.
The man entered the bank but then exited out of another door. When the taxi driver noticed, he went to confront the man about paying his fare.
After approaching the man, officials say the taxi driver was punched in the face and kicked. Adding that the man then revealed and pulled a knife out of his backpack and began threatening the driver.
After the disturbance, the man ran from the scene. Police were able to find him quickly, not far from where the incident began. Authorities say the knife was found in a nearby flowerbed.
The 65-year-old Guelph man is now facing charges of:
- Assault with a weapon
- Possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose
- Carrying a concealed weapon
- Uttering threats
- Transportation fraud
- Two counts of breaching a probation order
