Construction on new transit station to begin this month

Construction on the new Grand River Transit (GRT) Doon Station is set to begin this August.
The station near Conestoga College off Doon Valley Drive will include nine bus bays.
Among other features, new shelters and shelter heaters will be installed, along with display screens and bike parking.
“The new station will be a modern, accessible transit facility that will make connections easier and improve the overall customer experience,” read an update on GRT’s website.
The final designs were approved by Regional Council back on January 2024.
The start of construction however, comes as GRT reported a drop in ridership levels, most notably in those high student traffic areas.
A mid-year report coming to regional councillors next week shows ridership dropped 9.6 per cent from 2025 levels.
The tally is a decline from the 11.4 million riders who boarded local transit during the same timeframe last year, and a continued drop in the student population is being blamed for the slump.
The report directly points to new immigration policies and revised international student caps that were introduced by the federal government.
Construction on the Doon Station is set to wrap up sometime next year.
