A new public school is coming to southwest Kitchener, and the board wants to know what you think it should be named.
The Waterloo Region District School Board is opening a new school at 670 Thomas Slee Drive, around New Dundee Road and Homer Watson Boulevard, in September this year.
The board is gathering ideas for a name for the new school until Feb. 21.
A naming committee will then select their top ten choices, which will be brought back to the public to choose the top three from those ten.
The top three then go to the Board of Trustees, and while the most popular of the three will be considered the recommended choice, the Trustees get final say on choosing from those three.
The board said school names must be safe, welcoming, and inclusive, and “only submissions that adhere to the WRDSB’s commitment to Indigenous sovereignty, equity and human rights will be considered.”
Schools cannot be named after individuals or families, or any corporation or business.
The board wants suggestions that are meaningful and reflect local historic events, places, or distinguishing characteristics of the school’s area.
