CCTV cameras installed by Fairview Park Mall in Kitchener

Two closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras are now live in Kitchener.
The cameras are up at Fairway Road and Wilson Avenue and Fairway Road at Highway 8. Both those locations are right by Fairview Park Mall.
City councillors approved the use of city infrastructure for the cameras back in April. It was the second municipality to do so, following Waterloo Council’s decision.
When speaking to Kitchener city councillors in the spring, Regional Police Deputy Chief Jen Davis said cameras could also be installed in downtown Kitchener on King Street.
“You have a community that has been asking for it, and a business community that is asking for it, as well as Fairview Park Mall because of incidents that have been happening in that area of the city,” said Davis.
Police have stressed the cameras would not be used as a live feed but accessed retroactively as a tool for investigations, and any unused footage would be deleted after 30 days if it wasn’t part of an active investigation.
The pair of new cameras in Kitchener brings the total number of CCTV cameras in Waterloo Region up to 12.
There are four in Cambridge, two in North Dumfries, and four in Waterloo.
Wilmot Council decided the township would not move forward with cameras on township property.
No decision has been made in Woolwich and Wellesley townships.
