Panthers to host first ever ‘Orange Jersey Baseball Game’

The Kitchener Panthers will be partnering with Orange Shirt Society for a game on Aug. 16, against the Barrie Baycats.
This will be the Panthers’ first ever Orange Jersey Baseball Game. The KW Titans did something similar during their season on March 28, where they hosted their first ever Orange Jersey Basketball Game.
Like the Titans earlier this year, the Kitchener Panthers have partnered with Orange Shirt Society and Every Child Matters for the game. The Panthers will be wearing orange jerseys that were designed to support truth and reconciliation.
The specially made jersey’s have an “Orange Jersey Project” badge on the sleeve. A group that works with and around Indigenous communities, using sport to educate.
Sheena Merling, Project Manager for Orange Jersey Project said in a news release shared why the orange jersey’s hold more meaning than just baseball.
“This game is about much more than baseball. It is an opportunity to use sport as a bridge to bring Indigenous and non-Indigenous people together while creating space for education, truth, healing, youth, culture, and the message that Every Child Matters.”

What to expect
Fans at Jack Couch Park on Orange Jersey night will have an opportunity to meet with different members across the community. Fans are encouraged to learn more about truth and reconciliation, and share their opinions about baseball.
There will be an opening ceremony that will bring drummers, dancers, and children on to the field.
Shanif Hirani, the General Manager of the Kitchener Panthers said he believes community events like these are important.
“Hosting the first-ever Orange Jersey baseball game is a huge honour and an important opportunity for the Panthers to stand together, honour the children who never returned home, and support Every Child Matters. We’re proud to use the sport we love to help educate, remember, and bring our community together.”
There will be activities for anyone who arrives early before the game. Gates for Sunday’s game will open at 1 p.m., with the opening ceremony scheduled to begin at 1:45 p.m.
