Double-header ahead for Panthers and Baycats Sunday afternoon

The Kitchener Panthers have seen a number of games cancelled this season due to weather and air quality, and they’ll face a doubleheader against the Barrie Baycats on Sunday as a result of the condensed schedule.

Jack Couch Park will host a pair of shortened 7-inning games, both against the defending CBL finalist Baycats.

Kitchener enters Sunday hoping to continue their mid-week resurgence that saw them win back-to-back games on Tuesday and Thursday. After losing 8 in a row, the Panthers beat both Chatham-Kent and Guelph to move to a 12-24 record on the season. The Panthers find themselves tied with the Brantford Red Sox for the 7th seed, with Brantford also preparing to host a Sunday doubleheader.

On the flip side, the Barrie Baycats enter Sunday having dropped 3 straight contests, now sporting a 20-14 record. After spending most of the summer at the sharp end of the CBL field, the Baycats have lost track of the league’s top teams in the standings, and now sit tied with the Guelph Royals for the 4th and 5th seed in the league.

Barrie has swept Kitchener so far in 2026, winning two games at Barrie’s Athletic Kulture Stadium, and one at Jack Couch Park on June 21.

Pitching Matchup

Kitchener’s Dionys Rodriguez will face Barrie’s Saul Vasquez on the mound in game 1 of the doubleheader. Rodriguez was a mid-season addition to the Panthers roster, having pitched only 21.1 innings as of August 9. He has provided the Panthers with strong pitching in 3 of his 4 starts this season, with only 8 runs allowed in Hamilton on July 24 as the outlier. Sunday will be Rodriguez’s first time facing the Baycats in his CBL career.

Vasquez on the other hand, is one of the most dangerous strikeout threats in the Canadian Baseball League. The 2026 CBL all-star has struck out 81 batters this season, 2nd behind only Hamilton’s Hector Yan. He sports a 4-1 record and won both of his prior two contests against Kitchener this season. In those two games, he allowed just 4 runs in 13 innings.

Game 2 will see Kitchener’s Trey Cruz make his second start as a Panther. He’ll pitch in front of his home crowd for the first time, after allowing 3 runs in a brief 2-inning start on the road in Guelph to start August.

Barrie’s Hayden Jaco will be his opponent in game 2, as he’ll face Kitchener for the first time this year. Jaco has only started one game this season and three in his career, and likely represents a bullpen game approach for Barrie’s second half of the doubleheader.

Malik Williams and the Panthers offense will need to capitalize on the doubleheader format to try to push Vasquez and Jaco off the mound as quickly as possible. Barrie has already used a number of its relief arms throughout the weekend, and will likely be operating with a strained pitching staff through Sunday’s 14 combined innings. Kitchener, on the other hand, will presumably feature a relatively fresh set of pitchers, as they have not been in action since Thursday.

“Stuff the Bus”

Sunday is the Panthers “Stuff the Bus” day in partnership with the Food Bank of Waterloo Region. The Panthers have encouraged those who will attend Sunday’s games to bring non-perishable food items to donate to a bus that will deliver them to those in need around the region.

Kitchener Panthers games are broadcast live on YouTube, and tickets for every Kitchener Panthers home game can be found at the ticket portal on their website.
