Black History Month bus wrap back for February

A Black History Month bus is back on Waterloo Region roadways this February.

Sunday, February 1, the Region of Waterloo re-launched the popular bus wrap that was unveiled last year, designed by local artist, and Wilfrid Laurier University student Vanessa Nkansah-Okoree.

The bus wrap is brightly coloured with a green, yellow, orange and red background and the phrase “Black Excellence: Past strength, present brilliance and future promise.”

There are also numerous portraits of Black individuals on the sides of the bus displaying a wide range of Black identities.

“I want to challenge the narrow, stereotypical portrayals of Black people and instead celebrate the depth of our identities,” said Nkansah-Okoree.

“Ultimately, what I’m trying to convey is that strength comes from unity, but that unity doesn’t mean uniformity. By embracing our differences and recognizing the importance of diverse representation, we can create a more inclusive, empowered community.”

Ten community groups came together to help make the bus wrap a reality.
