Waterloo Region gets funding to battle extreme heat for housing projects

The federal government is spending $34 million for 141 climate resilience projects across the country.

Environment Minister Julie Dabrusin was in Halifax Wednesday to make the announcement.

The cash will support projects here in Waterloo Region where nearly $650,000 was announced to fight extreme heat for resident housing locally.

On top of that, $140,000 in federal funding was approved for the Region’s Infrastructure Climate Risk Assessment and Climate Change Adaptation Plan.

In Kitchener, $687,420 was approved for implementing floodway reduction through demolition and site restoration.

In all, 128 communities across Canada will receive funding for various projects.

Other projects included nearly $800,000 in Halifax to install cooling measures in that city’s parks to help residents stay cool in extreme heat.

A Quebec community will also get $1 million for flood-reduction measures.
