Special weather statement issued as region gets put back in the freezer

By Justin Koehler

After a brief winter thaw in Waterloo Region at the tail end of the work week, it’s now set to be put back in the freezer. A special weather statement has now been issued, calling for freezing rain Saturday afternoon and overnight.

The statement comes from Environment Canada, which said precipitation will begin as snow or rain with the potential to transition to freezing rain.

It stated that the region can expect to see icy and slippery conditions because of it, with up to 2 mm of ice accretion possible.

Areas south of Highway 401 are not expected to be heavily impacted as temperatures are set to remain above the freezing mark.

That said, the special weather statement still warns that roads, walkways, and sidewalks may become slippery as the day progresses.

Precipitation is expected to shift back to snowfall overnight, with around two to four centimetres expected heading into Sunday.
