Flooding continues to be an issue across part of Waterloo Region this weekend with the warming temperatures causing an abundance of snow melt.
The GRCA has updated its flood messages for New Hamburg and Ayr, warning that river flows in those towns could see a Flood Warning Zone 1. The warning kicked in for New Hamburg on Saturday morning and in Ayr overnight heading into Sunday morning. Municipal flood officials in Wilmot Township and North Dumfries have been notified and are letting residences know that could be affected.
Localized flooding has already lead to some road closures in New Hamburg, including on Holland Mills Road between Bleams Road to the Nith River Bridge and Lisbon Road east of Nafziger Road.
On Thursday, the GRCA issued flood watches for the Nith River and the lower Grand River. The service says that warming temperatures along with above level snowpack levels across the watershed have led to more localized flooding. They note that temperatures will hover around the freezing mark for Saturday as a low pressure system makes its way through the region, bringing ice pellets and more snow.
“Recent GRCA snow measurements captured 30-80 mm of equivalent water content,” the message said. “The warm temperatures combined with rain caused snowmelt and runoff throughout the watershed.”
Flood watches remain in effect for towns and townships across the Grand River, including Brantford, Brant County, Six Nations, Caledonia and Dunnville.
