OPP urge drivers to move over after 401 crash involving MTO truck

OPP are urging drivers to stay attentive and move over for emergency vehicles after a crash involving an MTO truck on Highway 401 just outside of Woodstock.
The collision happened around 2 p.m. on Monday afternoon as a heavy crash truck was struck from behind at Towerline Rd.
The driver of the involved passenger vehicle was taken to hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
The driver of the MTO truck was taken to hospital as a precaution.
At the time of the crash, the MTO truck was stopped in the fast lane with a big sign and arrow attached, indicating that drivers need to move over.
OPP Sgt. Ed Sanchuk said witnesses reported the passenger vehicle slammed into the back of the truck at highway speeds.
“When you’re travelling, please make sure that you’re paying attention to your surroundings,” Sanchuk said. “Speaking to the road crews out here, and they were telling me that drivers were attempting to pass them on the left hand side, which is putting everyone in danger.”
“When you do see these machines out on our roadways, they want to get home safely to their families. They have children just like you do, they have loved ones that are expecting them home, and all they need to do is do their job safely. So when you see these big trucks, especially with the arrow, make sure that you move over,” Sanchuk pleaded.
Sanchuk also thanked Good Samaritans who stopped at the scene to provide assistance following the collision.
Two eastbound 401 lanes were temporarily closed during the afternoon commute Monday but reopened shortly after 4:30 p.m.
OPP continue to investigate the crash.
