The Greater KW Chamber of Commerce is saying the loss of 1,200 jobs with the closure of the Schneiders plant will have a significant impact,
“There are not many employers that can bring that many jobs in one foul swoop.”
That’s President and CEO, of the Chamber, Ian McLean. He told 570 News that while each of these jobs, by rule of thumb usually support 2 or 3 “spin-off” jobs, “and not necessarily they’d all go, but those 2 or 3 tertiary jobs will be affected by this plant closure.”
The good news, is that 2014 is some time away, there is time to figure out what’s next, “these things are never easy to deal with, but as a community, I think one of our strength is that we do bounce back, come together and figure out what’s next for the community.”
McLean said he has spoken with his counter part at the Cambridge Chamber of Commerce, Greg Durocher and they have a meeting on Monday to talk about a plan to attract new employers and job opportunities to the region.
McLean said they will reach out to their networks across the country, “there’s a great opportunity, there’s a plant here, there are other opportunities to bring manufacturing, whether it’s food processing or other manufacturing to this region, because there are all kinds of advantages to setting up shop here.”
