Update on electric bike and scooter program coming to regional council

As residents in Waterloo Region are riding electric bikes and scooters more details are on the way to regional council Tuesday evening on how they’re using the devices.

The Neuron Mobility program was first introduced in 2023 and received a five-year extension in February 2025.

Statistics from 2025 show that those bright orange scooters see steady use for commuting to work, school and shopping.

People using the Neuron bikes and scooters travelled 235,000 km around the region in 2025, which equals about 125,000 trips based on their average distance of just under 2 km.

The program’s relation to public transit continues to be fairly minimal; only 22 per cent of people say they used it as a connector to public transportation, though 28 per cent say their trip on a scooter started or ended at a transit stop.

About 62 per cent of people used a scooter to commute to work or study, 73 per cent combined their trip with a walk, and two-thirds made a purchase of some kind while they were out and about.

More information on that program is set to be revealed to council Feb. 17 after 5 p.m.
