Environment Canada upgrades forecast, calls for possibly 25 cm of snowfall

By Justin Koehler

It’s shaping up to be a snow-filled wrap-up to 2025. Environment Canada has upgraded its forecasts for Waterloo Region, saying between 15 and 25 cm of snow could fall before the start of New Year’s Day.

It comes after a slew of snow has already fallen throughout the week. Monday the region saw around five centimetres of snowfall throughout the course of the day, leading to dangerous conditions across the board, with another five centimetres falling Tuesday.

According to the Region of Waterloo’s Paramedics Service, they’ve already had to respond to a number of collision-related calls throughout the week, and are urging residents to stay home if they can.

Today’s forecast shows no signs of improvement for treacherous driving conditions, with a Yellow Warning for Snow Squalls now in effect.

Environment Canada says local precipitation levels could fluctuate with the west side of Waterloo Region being expected to be hit the hardest.

That trend is looking to stay consistent through the remainder of the week as well, with a chance of flurries pushing through into the weekend, before continuing into the workweek.

Alongside the ongoing and still expected snowfall, snow events have been declared throughout the region, including for Kitchener, Cambridge, Waterloo, Wellesley Township, Wilmot Township, as well as a Significant Weather Event for Woolwich Township.

It means that on-street parking is banned throughout much of Waterloo Region for the next 24 hours, with hazardous driving conditions expected to push into Wednesday.

All in all, throughout the course of this winter blizzard, it’s recommended to stay home if possible.

If it’s important to head out, a few key reminders include:

  • Slowing down on the drive, avoid speeding
  • Keep an emergency kit inside vehicles
  • Clearing off vehicles entirely of snow and ice
  • Making sure windshield washer fluid is filled
  • If in a collision, remain inside the vehicle to avoid further issues, turning on hazard lights
