World Cup semi-final frenzy continues at local watch parties

Two spots in the World Cup semi-final are already claimed heading into the weekend, and many throughout the region will be heading to local watch parties to watch the other placements be decided.
Saturday, July 11 will see a pair of marquee contests. First, Erling Haaland and Norway will take on Harry Kane and England in a matinee game at 5 p.m. Then, Lionel Messi and Argentina will take on the winners of Canada’s group, Switzerland, in an evening contest at 9 p.m.
Kitchener – Carl Zehr Square
Aside from the usual watch party events, Carl Zehr Square outside Kitchener city hall will play host to the “Canada Celebrates FIFA World Cup 2026” event. The celebration, officially hosted by FIFA, is a major World Cup-themed event.
The event will include interactive activities like skills challenges, mini soccer games and other soccer themed activities. Food trucks and a licensed beer garden will be available through the afternoon, with Jamaican-influenced rhythms of Toronto-based band ‘Reggadiction’ serenading the party.
The festivities will take place at Carl Zehr Square beginning at 3 p.m on Saturday, July 11.
Cambridge – Gaslight District
Those who live closer to Cambridge need not worry about getting their fix of soccer action, as the Gaslight District returns with a watch party for both Saturday matches as well.
Turnouts have been massive at the district’s watch parties throughout the World Cup, largely thanks to the massive video wall, the largest of its kind in Canada. Local bars and eateries will remain open throughout the afternoon, and the organizers remind you to consider bringing your own seating to ensure you find yourself a space, as attendance has been sizeable at most games.
Kitchener – Kitchener Market
An alternative to those in Kitchener would be the Kitchener Market’s watch party. The market’s outdoor piazza has hosted a viewing party for every game of the 2026 World Cup, and Saturday will be no different. “Soccer Central” will once again feature a variety of kids’ activities, food trucks and market vendors as well as a licensed bar for the parents. The outdoor piazza’s 21-foot screen will show the game on what is expected to be a beautiful, sunny Saturday afternoon. Organizers say there will be some muskoka chairs available on the piazza, but to consider also bringing your own seating as attendance is expected to be vast once again.
Those worried about rain or vast heat at the outdoor World Cup events need not worry, no sizeable chance of rain is projected in the forecast, and the day’s daily high will peak at a projected 27 degrees.
