Police see increase in serious e-scooter crashes in Waterloo Region

Police are seeing an increase in serious e-scooter crashes in Waterloo Region.
According to data from the Waterloo Regional Police Service’s (WRPS) traffic unit, 40 e-scooter riders were injured in collisions with vehicles between Aug. 17, 2025 and Aug. 17, 2026.
Four of those riders suffered major injuries, including a 19-year-old from Kitchener who was involved in a crash in July.
“The number of serious injuries is already higher in 2026 than it was in all of 2025,” said a WRPS spokesperson in an e-mail to CityNews Kitchener.
Since January, three e-scooter riders have sustained major injuries resulting from crashes, compared to just one in all of last year.
The number of e-scooter crashes is also on pace to exceed last year’s total.
In 2025, there were 28 reported e-scooter collisions locally. So far this year, there have been 22.
