Crews respond to balcony fire in Waterloo, no injuries reported

By Erin Anderson

The Waterloo Fire Department responded to an apartment balcony fire on Thursday.

The fire was reported around 4:30 p.m. at a residential building on King St. South.

Crews were able to confine the fire to the balcony and no injuries were reported.

It was a high-visibility response due to the amount of traffic in the area, which included the LRT.

As a result, King St. South was temporarily closed between John St. and Allen St. The road reopened around 5:30 p.m.

The cause of the balcony fire continues to be investigated and damage is estimated at under $100,000.

Firefighters fought the flames while grappling with high-risk air quality because of drifting wildfire smoke from northern Ontario.
