Unsafe, illegal firework use closes Victoria Park for another Canada Day

For yet another Canada Day, the City of Kitchener closed Victoria Park overnight.

According to regional police, the park was closed at around 8:45 p.m. due to ongoing public safety concerns related to the unsafe and illegal use of fireworks.

Officers were on scene at the park and reportedly addressed the situation, though there were no reports of any injuries.

Police added that one youth was arrested and he was charged with failing to leave the park when directed by officers.

The park was later reopened according to police.

“We would like to thank residents and visitors for their cooperation throughout the Canada Day celebrations,” said regional police in a message to 570 NewsRadio.

The park has been an annual spot for youths shooting off fireworks at each other, passers-by, even police vehicles.
