Assault involving fireworks in Waterloo being investigated

With Canada Day less than 24 hours away, regional police are investigating an alleged assault involving fireworks in Waterloo.

On Sunday, around 2:40 a.m., the victim had a lit firework thrown at them, landing in their lap while sitting on a bench on King Street South near Willis Way. The firework came from a male suspect in a passing truck that was last seen heading towards the Uptown core of the city.

The suspect is described as a white male wearing a white hat and a black shirt, and was sitting in the front passenger seat of a black truck.

No physical injuries were reported from the incident and the investigation is still ongoing.

Anyone with information is asked to call police at 519-570-9777, extension 6399, or can provide an anonymous tip to Crime Stoppers.

This is not the first incident involving fireworks being directed at people during a major holiday long weekend. During the Victoria Day long weekend, three youths were charged after setting off fireworks in Gaukel Block in Kitchener that was directed at people and traffic.

During Canada Day celebrations last year, a Waterloo councillor was shot in the face with fireworks after attending a drone show in Waterloo Park.
