Kitchener bylaw: Zero-tolerance for fireworks misuse

We already know Waterloo Regional Police Service will have a noticeable presence around the municipality on Wednesday, with a particular focus on Victoria Park.

Alongside police will be a full roster of bylaw officers, ready to enforce the regulations around fireworks use, on Canada Day.

Steve Vrentzos, Director, Bylaw Enforcement, City of Kitchener, told 570 NewsRadio the fireworks regulations are straightforward and common sense.

“They must be set off on private property. So, they’re not permitted be set off on any city street or parks, trails, school yards or wooded lots. You must be situated at least 10 meters away from any building or structure. And ensure if spectators are observing the fireworks being set off on private property, they are safe distance away.”

Recent years have seen an overhaul of fireworks regulation, including the banning of the sale of the items in the cities of Kitchener and Waterloo.

This came after several dangerous incidents involving the misuse of fireworks in and around Victoria Park.

Vrentzos said bylaw officers don’t play around. If you are found to be violating the bylaw, don’t expect a break just because it’s your first time.

“For fireworks, it’s a zero-tolerance policy. That’s the direction we’ve used for quite a few years now. So, violations could result between $1,000 to $1,500 fines for first offences.”

In the City of Kitchener, fireworks are only permitted on the actual holiday. In this case, Canada Day. They may only be lit between the hours of 9 p.m. and 11 p.m.

Should you run into an instance of nuisance fireworks, Vrentzos recommends calling the region’s centralized bylaw line: 519-585-8088.

He says the appropriate officer will be dispatched and begin an investigation.

The City of Kitchener has a bunch of information posted about how to enjoy Canada Day around the region. It includes a list of what is open and closed on the holiday as well as some safety tips if fireworks are in your plans.
