Prolonged closure on Duke Street in preparation for transit hub

The spring construction schedule heats up in Kitchener on Monday, with some significant work on Duke Street in preparation for the Kitchener Central Transit Hub.

Crews from Avertex Utility Solutions will be on Duke from Victoria Street to Wellington Street starting Monday, working 24 hours a day from Monday until May 17, with daytime work continuing until May 29.

The region is alerting residents near Duke Street to expect higher-than-normal noise levels in the coming weeks, especially during the overnight hours.

Crews are expected to make an effort to reduce noise and disruptions where possible. Duke Street will be closed from Victoria Street to Wellington Street while work is underway.

Work on the Kitchener Central Transit Hub was slated to begin in 2025. The hub is projected to cost around $35 million, with $33 million coming from the provincial government.

Features of the Kitchener Central Transit Hub include a pedestrian bridge over King Street and a loop for Grand River Transit and GO Transit buses.
