Kitchener Ranger named OHL’s most outstanding player

A Kitchener Ranger has been named the league’s most outstanding player.

Forward Sam O’Reilly has been named the Red Tilson Trophy winner, a well-deserved honour for an incredible season in which the Tampa Bay Lightning prospect led the Rangers to the OHL Finals.

O’Reilly put up 71 points throughout the regular season and currently leads all skaters in the postseason with 14 goals in 14 games.

“I am incredibly honoured to receive the Red Tilson Trophy,” O’Reilly said in a press release. “I wouldn’t be accepting this award today without the support of my family, billets and teammates throughout my years in the league. I’d like to thank my coaches and support staff in London and now Kitchener.”

He’s only the fourth Ranger in history to receive the award, and the first since Justin Azevedo in 2008. That season was, coincidentally, the last time the Kitchener Rangers won the Western Conference and the OHL Championship.

The Rangers kick off the OHL finals on Wednesday night against the Barrie Colts at the Aud.

“Even though he has only spent half a season in Kitchener his impact on our team has been immeasurable,” Rangers General Manager Mike McKenzie, said. “He is a complete player, winner and couldn’t be more deserving of this award. Congratulations to Sam and his family on this tremendous honour.”
