Guelph man arrested after mid-summer assault with glass bottle

Guelph Police Service say they’ve arrested a man following an assault with a broken glass bottle in downtown Guelph in July.

On the morning of July 17, shortly before 5:00 a.m., authorities were alerted that a man had been cut across the chest in an altercation. The suspect who had attacked the victim was unknown to him according to police.

The altercation took place outside a business at Wyndham Street North and Cork Street East in Guelph, a few steps away from Guelph’s Old Quebec Street mall.

A subsequent investigation by Guelph Police found that the altercation began with a verbal disagreement between the parties inside the business on Wyndham Street, which moved outside, leading to the physical altercation. The suspect is said to have grabbed a bottle from a nearby bystander, breaking it on the ground, before lunging towards the victim.

The victim of the attack was taken to a trauma centre in Hamilton to receive treatment.

The 36-year-old Guelph suspect was later arrested by a different police service on Thursday, before being returned to the custody of Guelph Police. The man has been charged with assault with a weapon.

The suspect was held for a bail hearing on Friday.
