Folks in Waterloo Region have finally made it to the end of this harsh and frigid winter season as of Friday.
On the astronomical calendar, spring is set to begin at 10:46 a.m. on March 20.
Meteorologists at Environment Canada are predicting somewhat of an unsettled start to the new season.
“For the most part, we’re gonna be below seasonal, I know people are not going to love to hear that, but for the next few days at least we’re going to be above seasonal,” explained Trudy Kidd, meteorologist with Environment Canada.
For the first weekend of spring, the region will see highs of 7 C and overnight lows of around -1 C.
“Temperatures in the spring don’t warm in a smooth and gradual way, it’s a really changeable time of the year, and it’s a bit of a bumpy road,” added Kidd. “It’s not time to put away the snow shovels and winter gear just yet; we’re still going to need it.”
Kidd explained that Waterloo Region continues to see average snowfall amounts of about 10 cm throughout the month of April, and that residents should avoid putting away snow shovels and winter equipment for good.
“We can get anything and everything: severe thunderstorms one day and snowfall the next,” said Kidd.
“We’ll have some beautiful days, there’s no doubt about it, but I like to say that spring is predictably unpredictable.”
Looking back at the winter, according to Environment Canada, the region saw 232.1 cm of snow, less than the snowfall record of 251.4 cm set back in 2007/08.
