Kitchener approves tax increase

Kitchener City Council has approved a 2.9 per cent property tax increase. The average home owner will now pay about 28 dollars more on their bill.

Budget deliberations went on for nine hours on Monday. Council had set a mandate to get the increase under three per cent.

Mayor Carl Zehr says he’s pleased council were able to achieve their goal.

A number of big ticket items were approved, including funding the remediation of Victoria Park Lake — although council is hoping to get about 90% of the cost funded by the Federal Government.

Councillor Berry Vrbanovic called it a tough budget to get done because of the economy bottoming out last year.

But that didn’t satisfy Councillor John Gazzola who thought the financial document should have come in around 1% for ratepayers, giving them a break he says because they’ve gone through enough challenges economically.
