Cities split on question of amalgamation

The issue of amalgamation was dealt with by both Kitchener and Waterloo city councils Monday.

A group of business leaders are behind the latest push to have the question, “”Would you support members of council engaging in a dialogue about the merits of merging the cities of Kitchener and Waterloo? ” added to the municipal elections ballot in October.

Kitchener voted 6-1 in favour of the question.

Kitchener Mayor Carl Zehr tells 570 News it’s important they get a mandate from the public to deal with this matter on a dialogue basis.

In Waterloo, councillors took a more cautious approach. There was a 2 hour discussion session between councillors and delgations both for and against the question before they voted.
They passed a 6-1 motion for staff to report back on January 25 with more information on the process of amalgamation and how the ministry of municipal affairs and housing could word the question.
