Suspended GTA driver caught speeding in 60 km/h zone in Guelph

A man from Brampton is facing stunt driving charges for going 43 km/h over the limit in the city’s south end.

A police officer was patrolling Wellington Street West near the Hanlon Parkway around 12:20 p.m. on Thursday when he saw a vehicle whip by. The van was clocked at 103 km/h in the 60 km/h zone.

The officer pulled over the driver from the GTA, and the 24-year-old was also suspended. He faces charges of speeding, stunt driving and driving while suspended, bringing his licence suspension to a further 30 days.

The van was impounded for two weeks.

If convicted, he will receive a minimum licence suspension of one year, a fine of $2,000 and six demerit points.

Guelph police are routinely trying to stop excessive speeding in the municipality. Officials say that driving at high rates of speed is one of the reasons for fatal collisions.

Recently, Waterloo Regional Police Service laid charges against a 16-year-old in connection with a crash that killed a 51-year-old man on a lawn tractor.

According to regional police, the incident happened on June 15 when a vehicle full of teens was travelling 191 km/h down Clyde Road in the township, a 50 km/h zone according to police, meaning they were going nearly four times over the limit.

There were no injuries reported amongst the four teens who were in the speeding vehicle.

The teen driver, a girl from Cambridge, was charged with dangerous operation of a vehicle causing death, speeding, and two counts of stunt driving.

The three other teens in the vehicle at the time, ages 15, 16, and 17, were also arrested and charged with two counts each of failing to comply with a release order.
