Beloved Galt café featured in popular TV show closes Friday

It’s a bittersweet day for a family-owned café that’s been in the heart of Galt for over two decades.

Friday is the last day for customers to enjoy a coffee and treat at Grand Café in the historic Queen’s Square.

The reason for the closure?

After 23 years, owners Michelle and Michael said it was time to retire.

They posted about their retirement on social media, with a video tribute looking back on the past several years of being in the Galt community.

“Serving this community has been one of the greatest joys of our lives,” reads a social media post.

“We’ve shared countless coffees, conversations, celebrations, and friendships with all of you. Your support over the years has meant more than we can express.”

The local business has had its time in the limelight. It was featured in the popular show, The Handmaid’s Tale.

Crews have filmed the show in Cambridge at many locations, and many times over the years, but this particular café was featured in Season 1, where June (Elizabeth Moss) took shelter during the protests.
