Motorist charged after Kitchener ION collision

A 31-year-old man is now facing careless driving charges after a Wednesday collision that halted a section of ION Light Rail Transit and snarled traffic through a busy stretch of Kitchener roadway.

It was around 6:30 p.m. when emergency crews were called out to a crash involving the ION and a vehicle in the King Street West and Linwood Avenue area. That’s right by WRHN @ Midtown, formerly known as Grand River Hospital.

The accused driver, a 31-year-old man from outside the region, suffered minor injuries and was taken to local hospital.

He has since been charged with careless driving and turn not in safety.

That crash brought road closures in the area for multiple hours, in order to conduct the investigation and repairs.

ION service was also impacted, with trains halted between Willis Way and Waterloo Public Square Station and Kitchener Market Station for roughly two hours.

The collision was one of two crashes involving ION Light Rail Transit service on Wednesday, with an earlier collision just after noon in the area of King Street West and Pine Street. No injuries were reported in that collision.
