Some welcome news for cardiac patients in Waterloo Region.

The St. Mary's General Hospital Cardiac Program will being getting its first MRI machine.

The local program is the only one of its kind in Ontario without an MRI machine.

St. Mary's is the region cardiac centre and says a joint fundraiser between St. Mary's General and Grand River Hospital brought in ten million dollars.

The hospital says almost eight million of that will go to its first magnetic resonance imaging machine and it will be ready for patients in January of 2024.

Grand River Hospital replaced its aging MRI machine last year which reportedly logged more than 17,000 uses annually.

A second unit went online at Grand River last month and according to the hospital did another 4,500 scans.
