Wait almost over for region to host 53rd Ontario Summer Games

It has been nearly a year and a half since it was announced by the Ontario Ministry of Sport that Waterloo Region would be hosting the 2026 Ontario Summer Games. Finally, this week will see over 4000 athletes across 24 sports between the ages of 12 and 18 compete in 4 days of competition between July 30 and August 2, 2026.
The games have taken place since 1973, when the first games were hosted by the city of Oshawa. Now, Waterloo Region gets the honours, and Wilfrid Laurier University will be the first venue to welcome the athletes and over 600 coaches and trainers to the region for the event.
The opening ceremony will take place on Thursday from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Wilfrid Laurier’s University Stadium. The ceremony will provide a chance for the roughly 4200 athletes to come together to celebrate their achievements prior to the competitions kicking off. Organizers say the event will also feature an athlete parade, an athlete oath, and a concert by DJ Z-Spinz.

The area around the stadium will also play host to the Ontario Summer Games’ Fan Fest starting at 3:30 p.m. Attendees will get a chance to enjoy local venders, entertainment, and various sponsorship activations.
Tickets are required for the opening ceremony and can be purchased for $12 for adults, with children under 2 years old being free of charge. Seating is first-come, first-served at University Stadium. You can find tickets for the opening ceremony here.
The games themselves will see 24 different sports take place at 19 venues throughout Waterloo Region. The sports included in the games are:

– Field Lacrosse
– Flag Football
– Golf
– Hockey (Men’s and Women’s)

– Road Cycling
– Rugby
– Sailing
– Skeet Shooting
– Soccer
– Softball (Men’s and Women’s)
– Table Tennis
– Triathalon
– Wushu
The Waterloo Region website for the games estimates that hosting the event will bring in an estimated $6 million in economic activity to the region.
After a public call for volunteers in June, the event will see over 1000 volunteers help to operate the festivities and ensure the intergrity of the competitons.
