Travellers beware: Guelph man scammed out of Aeroplan points

By Erin Anderson

A frequent flyer in Guelph was scammed out of thousands of dollars worth of Aeroplan points and an arrest has been made.

According to Guelph police, the male resident fell victim to a scam in Jan. 2025 and his cellphone was compromised.

While the man took security-driven steps like changing his passwords, he forgot to change the email address that was associated with his Aeroplan account.

The fraudster later used the victim’s account to book several flights within Canada.

Police say the losses equate to almost $2,100 in Aeroplan points.

Last week, police in Quebec arrested a 23-year-old Montreal man in connection with the investigation.

The accused has been charged with fraud under $5,000 and will appear in Guelph court on Oct. 13.
