Weather recap: Hot start to July with little precipitation

A weather summary for July shows the month started out sweltering in Waterloo Region.
The data from the Eric D. Soulis Memorial Weather Station at the University of Waterloo puts the monthly maximum temperature at 34.2 degrees Celsius.
The high on July 14 would have marked the warmest recorded temperature in the region since July of 2000 if we hadn’t experienced a heat wave in the final days of June.
The extreme heat continued for the first two weeks of July but the second half of the month wasn’t quite as hot, so the average daily temperature came in at 27.7 degrees.
There were only seven days of precipitation in July and the weather station says that’s the lowest amount locally since 2001.
However, significant rainfall on July 9 and and July 21 brought the monthly precipitation up to 77.6 mm, which is only slightly below the average total of 83.7 mm.
