GRCA posts water safety notice due to heavy rainfall

Grand River Conservation Authority (GRCA) has released a warning surrounding watershed levels due to the heavy rainfall on Sunday morning.

In a release published at 9:30 a.m., GRCA says some areas of the local watershed have already received 30 mm of rain since 3:00 a.m., and more rain is expected throughout the course of Sunday. They also warn that thunderstorms may raise the expected rainfall in certain localized areas.

GRCA warns that intense rain into local rivers and streams can cause increased flows that can lead to minor flooding. However, their release indicates that no significant flooding is expected as a result of Sunday’s weather system. They do warn some low-lying areas could see more water near watercourses, and water puddled up on some urban roads if drainage systems back up underground.

In the statement, GRCA says reservoirs are operating at their normal level for the season, and can be relied upon to help reduce the risk of flooding in the region.

At the end of their release, GRCA has published the following warning:

The public is encouraged to exercise extreme caution around all local waterways. Banks adjacent to rivers and creeks are very slippery and, when combined with fast-moving water, pose a serious hazard. Families are encouraged to keep children and pets away from all watercourses. Recreational users near local waterways should be aware of the current conditions and exercise additional caution. River conditions and forecasts are being monitored closely, and any flood messages will be issued as needed.

The GRCA alert message will be in effect until 12:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
