Gaslight District draws noise complaints, Cambridge reviewing bylaw

The noise bylaw in the City of Cambridge is under review after recent noise complaints relating to The Gaslight District in Galt.
The city confirmed there were five noise complaints from the Gaslight area between June 11 and July 19, and two instances resulted in tickets for violating the noise bylaw.
Among the events put on during that timeframe were World Cup viewing parties, although the city said it cannot comment on the specific complaints or investigations.
“The City is committed to working collaboratively with event organizers to identify solutions that support vibrant community events while ensuring compliance with applicable bylaws,” said Hardy Bromberg, General Manager of Planning and Growth with the City of Cambridge.
Bromberg said all events involving amplified sound require a noise bylaw exemption from council, and acknowledged The Gaslight District as an integral part of the community.
“The City values the Gaslight District as an important gathering place and destination for residents, visitors and community events, and continues to support its role as a premier event space in not just Cambridge’s downtown, but in Southwestern Ontario,” Bromberg said.
The Gaslight District’s website describes the venue as Waterloo Region’s largest public square with a stage and massive outdoor video screen.
It’s been used for concerts, movie screenings, and viewing parties for big sporting events.
Bromberg said the updated noise bylaw is expected to return to Cambridge council in 2027.
