Transportation ministry ‘unpacking’ investigation into flyover falls

Following a massive snowstorm at the end of January turned into a string of similar crashes in Ontario.

In a matter of days, four vehicles hit snowbanks at the side of the road and were launched over guardrails. The lone fatality, 38-year-old Uyen Nguyen of Waterloo.

Nguyen crashed her vehicle just hours after a taxi had fallen from the flyover in the same area. The taxi driver survived the fall but was injured. In between the incidents, private contractors hired by the province were brought in to service the ramp, but they failed to clear the snowbanks.

At the announcement for new GO Train service to Stratford last week, the Minister of Transportation, Prabmeet Sarkaria, was asked if he thought it was a mistake for the contractors not to clear away the snow banks.

“We’re looking back at that incident, unpacking it with our contractors and seeing how we can improve on the clearing standards or the clearing of the snow removal, which was piled up across those ramps. That’s something we’ll continue to work with our contractors on,” said Sarkaria.

He went on to say, “We’re taking that very seriously. We’re making sure that our teams are looking at it, and making sure it never happens again.”

Sarkaria said if it is determined that negligence occurred, those responsible will be held to account.

“We hold our teams to a high account. We expect the safest operations from any of our contractors, and where there is wrongdoing, as the minister, we will make sure the contractor is held liable for that.”

In the aftermath of the two crashes in Kitchener on January 26, there were two more incidents in the week that followed. One on the QEW in Niagara and the other on Highway 427 in the GTA. Neither of those incidents was fatal.

A fundraiser was set up to support the family of Uyen Nguyen of Waterloo, who was killed after her vehicle fell from an overpass. (GoFundMe)
