A 38-year-old driver is dead following a serious crash that closed a significant stretch of the expressway in Kitchener on Monday morning.
According to Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), the southbound ramp from Highway 7 West to the eastbound lanes of Highway 8 have been closed following the collision at around 7:30 a.m.
Sgt. Kerry Schmidt of the OPP, said the 38-year-old Waterloo woman was on the ramp when she lost control of the vehicle, went up a snow embankment and over the concrete barrier, and landed onto the highway below. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Schmidt reported that this is the second vehicle to fall from the ramp onto the highway below on Monday morning.
In an afternoon update shared to social media, Schmidt said the flyover ramp to Highway 8 will remain closed until Ministry of Transportation contractors can clear the dangerous embankment.

“Plows are coming through, clearing the highways and pushing that show off to the side. In this case, they can’t push it over the wall because it would go down onto the highway below,” said Schmidt.
He said that the flyover ramp is expected to be closed for the rest of the day and into Monday evening, likely impacting the afternoon commute.
Road conditions, Schmidt said, are believed to be factors in the Monday morning crashes.
