Police say a driver has been charged after a crash in Waterloo that sent a young cyclist to hospital, and the youth’s parents have been ticketed.

It was at around 8:40 a.m. on Tuesday when regional police shared news of a collision, with officers responding to the area of University Avenue East and Woolwich Street.

Initially, police said a pedestrian was involved in the crash and that physical injuries were reported. They later clarified that the collision involved a 12-year-old cyclist and a Toyota pick-up truck.

The youth was transported to a local hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

The involved driver, a 46-year-old Waterloo man, was not hurt.

On Thursday, police confirmed the Waterloo man was charged with making an unsafe turn and driving with an obstructed view.

The youth’s parents were also issued a Provincial Offence Notice for allowing a person under 16 to drive a bicycle without a proper helmet.
