Mosquito trap in Kitchener tests positive for West Nile virus

By Erin Anderson

Region of Waterloo Public Health is reminding residents to protect themselves from mosquito bites after a surveillance trap in Kitchener tested positive for West Nile virus.

Public health says it’s the first positive mosquito trap in the region so far this year.

While no human cases have been reported locally, medical resident Dr. Megan Davis says the positive test result indicates that West Nile virus is present in our community.

“Protecting yourself against mosquito bites is the most effective way to avoid West Nile virus infection,” said Davis in a release. “You can also help reduce the mosquito population by removing still or standing water on your property, as that is where mosquitoes breed.”

Public health recommends using proper insect repellent, limiting time outdoors at dusk and dawn, and wearing light-coloured clothing with long sleeves and pants to help reduce your risk of being bitten.

People who are infected with West Nile virus may show symptoms three to 15 days after exposure and could experience fever, headache, muscle aches, stiff neck, swollen glands, and a skin rash.

Most people do not show any symptoms, but if they become severe, infected individuals should seek medical attention.
