OPP issue reminders ahead of slippery, snowy road conditions

By Justin Koehler

Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) are asking drivers to be prepared for worsening road conditions as a significant winter storm heads to Waterloo Region.

The municipality is expected to see a heavy amount of snowfall before the weekend, with Environment Canada predicting upwards of 30 to 50 centimetres of snow between Thursday and Saturday.

The increased snowfall will lead to slippery road conditions, with reduced visibility going hand-in-hand during some of the peak snowfall, the weather agency notes in its alerts.

Sergeant Ed Sanchuck with West Region OPP said in a video posted to social media that, on the best of days, speeding is dangerous wherever drivers are headed. During the winter, though, it only becomes increasingly more perilous.

“We just want to put a friendly reminder from our OPP family to your family, to please slow down, drive according to the road and weather conditions.”

He said making sure vehicles are prepped and ready is incredibly important throughout the winter months.

“Winter tires are going to help you in the winter season. It’s not going to prevent crashes; only you can do that by reducing your speed,” Sanchuk said. “Take your time and pack an ample supply of patience, especially in winter-like conditions.”

How to prepare for winter driving, according to OPP

  • Having winter tires installed
  • Signal when making turns
  • Have full headlight systems turned on during snowfall
  • Top up windshield washer fluid before hitting the road
  • Clear vehicles of snow completely
  • Leave early and prepare for slower-than-normal commutes

He added that, while it’s important to prepare vehicles, it’s arguably more important for drivers themselves to be attentive and cautious when on the roads in worsening conditions.
