Construction on $24M Scheifele Bridge to begin Monday

A project that has been in the works since 2021 is now set to get shovels in the ground.

Construction on the Scheifele Bridge on Northfield Drive over the Conestogo River is set to begin June 1. The bridge is undergoing a full $24 million replacement, with paved shoulders for buggies and cyclists.

A concrete barrier will also separate pedestrians from traffic on the east side of the new bridge.

The massive project will take a few years, with regional officials aiming for a 2028 completion.

Despite the work that needs to be done, Northfield Drive is expected to remain open in both directions through most of the project, with work completed in stages.

“Some short-term closures may be required over the three construction seasons to safely complete certain portions of the work,” reads a notice from the region.

“Residents will be notified in advance and detour routes will be communicated.”

Environmental assessment of the project began in 2021, with site preparation for crews beginning this past December.

Details on the project can be read here.
