An investigation by Waterloo Regional Police Service (WRPS) has led to the belief that a pair of Kitchener scams in May are related to each other.
On May 12, officers received a report of victims who had been defrauded out of a “significant amount of cash” by a supposed home contracting company. The company operated under the name ‘The Contract Doctor,’ and the group attended the home for three days between May 9 and May 11, tearing apart the roof.
The suspects left a tarp over the roof, claiming they would return to finish the job, before disappearing and not able to be contacted.
Then later in the month, on May 26, police responded to reports of a fraud that had occurred at the same home as the original scam on Kitchener’s Arrowhead Crescent. Authorities say two suspects posed as police officers investigating the previous fraud incident to gain entry to the victims’ residence.
The suspects stole cash from the victims and then left the area in a dark blue Volkswagen Atlas.
Investigators believe two different suspects attended the residence in each of the respective scams. They believe, though, that the second pair of suspects used the original fraud incident as a pretext to scam money from the victims. Police continue to investigate the identity of the individuals responsible for both incidents.

Members of the public are reminded:
- Police officers will never request cash or valuables for investigative purposes.
- Be cautious of unsolicited contractors who claim urgent repairs are required.
- Avoid making large cash payments, especially when pressured or asked to keep transactions confidential.
- Verify businesses independently and be cautious of newly established companies or online profiles.
- Do not allow anyone into your home until their identity has been confirmed.
The investigation remains ongoing by the General Investigations Unit.
