It was a snowy start to Sunday morning as a blanket of snow was on the ground before the sun rose on the region.
A special weather statement is in effect for Waterloo Region and the surrounding area with snow expected to fall throughout the day and into the evening.
Five centimeters of snow are expected, with some areas receiving as much as 10 cm. As of 10 a.m. Sunday, the E.D. Soulis Memorial Weather Station at the University of Waterloo reported 6 cm of snow had accumulated.
The snowy weather is expected to last into the week, with a chance of flurries on both Monday and Tuesday.
Environment Canada is warning there “remains uncertainty with respect to the track of this weather system, and as such forecast snowfall amounts may change.”
With snow building up on the roads and impacting visibility drivers are reminded to focus on safety and drive according to road conditions.
OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt said drivers should proceed with caution this morning with the slick road conditions.
“Hands on the wheel, eyes on the road and keep your focus on the task of driving,” said Schmidt. “Give yourself a little bit of extra time, it may take a little longer to get to where you’re going, and when you’re driving give more space behind the vehicle in front of you.”
