Two youths are facing charges following an assault that police say involved a noxious substance.
It happened in Dickson Park on Parkhill Road in Cambridge on Friday. Around 8:30 p.m., police responded to reports of an assault.
Through investigation, police determined that four victims had been sprayed with what they believe to be bear spray. The victims were treated for minor physical injuries.
Police arrested a 14-year-old male and a 15-year-old female.
The male has been charged with the following:
- Four counts of Assault with a Weapon;
- Administering a Noxious Substance;
- Possession of a Weapon for a Dangerous Purpose; and
- Outstanding warrants for previous offences.
He has been held for a bail hearing.
The female was charged with Possession of a Weapon for a Dangerous Purpose and is scheduled to appear in court at a later date.
Cambridge Mayor Jan Liggett confirmed the assaulted happened at the Cambridge Fall Fair and thanked WRPS for their “quick response and professionalism” following the incident. She noted that because of the winds that night, the spray may have affected others in the area.
“The health and safety of our community remains our highest priority, and we deeply appreciate the coordinated efforts of police, emergency responders, and event staff in responding to this unnecessary act that exposed innocent people to the substance,” said Liggett in a statement.
“As a leader in this community and a parent, I appeal to you to sit down with your teens and ask them if they attended the Fair. Tell them what happened and explain how choosing who you hang around with can take a turn down a path that could change their lives forever. Have an open and honest discussion and for the sake of their future, never assume that your child could not have been involved.”
The investigation is ongoing.
