4 teens charged after dangerous driving incident that injured two officers

Four teenagers have been arrested and charged after a dangerous driving spree led to a crash that sent two police officers to hospital.

According to Waterloo regional police (WRPS), officers responded to calls of a white Volkswagen hatchback driving dangerously on Highway 8 on Aug. 30. The driver of the Volkswagen reportedly kept another driver from exiting the highway and then followed them throughout the region.

The Volkswagen was seen running a red light and then driving the wrong way up the King Street East on-ramp, and police intervened to pull the vehicle over. They fled from the officers before colliding head-on with another police cruiser, eventually colliding with two more police vehicles.

Two officers were taken to hospital with minor injuries.

WRPS Constable, Chris Iden told 570 NewsRadio this incident highlights the dangers of the job.

“This is a great example of just how quickly things can happen for officers. Thankfully there were no major injuries. Because of the well coordinated effort and the great job by the officers involved, everybody was able to go home at the end of the day.”

The driver of the Volkswagen, an 18-year-old man, along with two 16-year-old boys and a 17-year-old boy, were arrested at the scene of the collision.

All four were charged with criminal harassment and disguise with intent. Iden specified the four young men had their faces covered as they were driving around, which is the reason for that particular charge.

The driver was also charged with multiple driving-related offences, including a charge for fleeing from police. They’re being held for a bail hearing.

Iden said the investigation is ongoing.

“We do believe the individuals involved may have been part of other driving complaints or perhaps even other collisions in the area. If not on that specific day, from other days too. Just because we are aware of historical events, we want to make sure that if anybody had encountered anything like this that we are made aware of it and investigate appropriately.”

Residents in the area are being asked to check dashcam footage for a white VW hatchback with no licence plates. They are also asking that if you have had an interaction with the suspect vehicle in the past or may have witnessed the vehicle to contact police.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the General Investigations Unit at (519) 653-7700 ex. 6370
