An investigation is ongoing through Waterloo Regional Police Service (WRPS) after a youth was left seriously injured following a an alleged robbery and abduction in Cambridge.

Officers say it happened on Sept. 5 at around 9:48 p.m. in the area of Saginaw Parkway and Townline Road.

WRPS said it was initially called about a reported robbery, finding a youth with serious, but non-life-threatening injuries when they arrived on scene. The youth was transported to hospital for treatment.

Once the initial investigation was underway, police say they learned that the victim was allegedly abducted and forced into a dark-coloured van by five unknown suspects.

They say the victim was then allegedly physically beaten, threatened with a firearm, and forced to transfer money into a cryptocurrency wallet. Once the transfer was complete, the suspects released the victim and fled the area, last seen travelling on Townline Road.

Those five suspects are described as black men in their twenties, all wearing dark clothing and face coverings.

The incident remains under active investigation through WRPS’ General Investigations Unit, now reaching out to the public for assistance.

Officers are asking anyone with dash-cam footage or nearby surveillance cameras from around the area to contact police at 519-570-9777, extension 6370. Anonymous information can also be provided to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or online.
