Fire at Kitchener Market not considered suspicious, clean up underway

Clean-up and safety checks continue this week after an overnight fire at the Kitchener Market early Sunday morning.

Around 1:02 a.m., fire crews were called to the popular market on King Street East. Crews believed the fire started in a vendor stall, and no foul play is suspected.

No one was hurt, with damage estimated at $50,000.

The City of Kitchener said updates on the status of the market itself would be provided in the coming days but there are no structural concerns with the building.

“Teams are working diligently to safely restore the facility,” reads a city statement. “The safety of market visitors, vendors and staff remains our highest priority.”

In an update Monday afternoon, the city confirmed that outdoor FIFA World Cup viewings will continue at the Kitchener Market as scheduled.

“However, there will be no access to the Market building for the next few games as cleaning continues,” said a social media post. “This means vendors and the bar will not be available, though portable washrooms will be on site.”
