Region installing danger and warning signs near Hidden Valley Dam

More signs are being posted by the region along parts of the Grand River.

The region said the new warning danger signs will be added over the next few weeks around the Hidden Valley Dam to let people know about the obstruction.

Danger signs will be placed along the railings at the dam and the wingwalls, and warning and no-fishing signs will be posted downstream on the east and west shores. Buoys have been recently installed on the river as well.

The region said this is part of a recently completed Public Safety Risk Assessment to address risks in the area.

“The Hidden Valley Dam is critical infrastructure that ensures a consistent water supply to the region’s communities. This intake supplies 20 per cent of the region’s drinking water,” said the region in a statement.

“The Grand River has become a favourite pastime for residents, and these additional signs will support the growing number of water users as they enjoy recreational activities in and along the waterway.”

This comes almost a year after two women were killed in July 2024 when they went over the dam. Since then, advocates have been calling for more signage to be installed.

The damn is located about a kilometre from the Freeport Bridge in Kitchener.
